Effects of Family Planning and Child Health Interventions on Adolescent Cognitive Functioning: Evidence from Matlab in Bangladesh

چکیده
Early childhood health interventions, such as vaccinations, improve the health status of young children in developing countries. It is believed that improvements in health and nutrition early on may lead to improved cognitive development, health, educational achievements, and labor market opportunities in the future. It is unclear, however, whether the benefits of these interventions are long-term, continuing into adolescence and adulthood, especially in environments where there are many competing health risks. This paper exploits a quasi-random placement and the phasing in of the Matlab Maternal and Child Health Project in Bangladesh to determine if typical family planning and early childhood health interventions received in childhood have lasting effects on cognitive functioning in late childhood and adolescence. Single and double difference with propensity score weighting as well as mother fixed-effects models are used to determine the intent-to-treat effects of the program. We estimate the intent-to-treat effects for those children whose mother was eligible for the family planning program when they were born, but born before most of the child health interventions were available, and for those children who were born when both components of the program were available. Eligibility for both aspects of the program in childhood leads to 0.3 standard deviation increase in cognitive functioning as measured by the Mini Mental State Exam when these children are 8-14 years of age. We find no program effect on the 15-19 year olds who may have benefited from the family planning program but not the child health interventions. 1 We would like to thank Jane Menken, Randall Kuhn, and Nizam Kahn for their useful comments and help with understanding the data and the study site.

Effects of Early Childhood Health on Later Life Cognitive Functioning: Evidence from Matlab Bangladesh
Early childhood health and nutrition interventions have been shown to improve the health status of young. It is believed that early life circumstances are crucial to success later in life. Yet causal evidence that the benefits of early childhood health interventions continue into adolescence and adulthood is sparse. This paper exploits a quasi-random placement of the Matlab Maternal and Child H...

متن کاملEnhancing Cognitive Functioning: Medium-Term Effects of a Health and Family Planning Program in Matlab
Cognitive development is a key contributor to future educational attainment, labor market outcomes, and overall wellbeing; but over 200 million children under five years of age are failing to reach their cognitive potential owing to deprivation early in life (Grantham-McGregor et al. 2007). Many programs in developed and developing countries, such as Head Start in the United States and conditio...
متن کاملHow Does Family Planning Promote Development? : Evidence from a Social Experiment
Family planning programs may have long-run consequences for families and economic development, in addition to fertility reduction, but these consequences have not been adequately assessed. Malthus foresaw that slowing population growth would increase wages. The UN 1994 Population Conference in Cairo concluded that family planning enhanced women’s health and empowerment, which were also objectiv...
متن کاملFamily planning and women's and children's health: long-term consequences of an outreach program in Matlab, Bangladesh.
We analyze the impact of an experimental maternal and child health and family planning program that was established in Matlab, Bangladesh, in 1977. Village data from 1974, 1982, and 1996 suggest that program villages experienced a decline in fertility of about 17 %. Household data from 1996 confirm that this decline in "surviving fertility" persisted for nearly two decades. Women in program vil...
